How to Use Google Suggest to Grow Your Long Tail Traffic

<img alt="traffic" src="/trafficlongtail.png" title="traffic">If you are not targeting long tail keywords, you are missing out on a lot of traffic. Out of the 262,169 visitors that came to Quick Sprout from search engines in the last 30 days, 238,195 came from long tail terms.That’s crazy. Just think about it: 91% of my search traffic comes from long tail phrases.Just a year ago, I was only getting 88,833 visitors a month from search engines. In a 14-month period, I was able to increase my search engine traffic, mainly from long tail SEO, by 173,336 visitors a month.How was I able to do that? I optimized my blog for long tail SEO. Here’s how I did it, and here’s how you can too:I know that Google Analytics shows “not provided” for most of your keywords, but it still shows you a good portion of the keywords that are driving your traffic. At the very least, you can see all of your keywords through Google Webmaster Tools.All you have to do is log into your Google Analytics account, click on “Acquisition,” then “Keywords,” and then “Organic”. You should end up seeing a list of keywords that drive you visitors.From there, you can focus on some of the keywords that bring you larger volumes of traffic that are relevant to your business.<img alt="business quotes traffic" src="/businessquotes.png" title="business quotes traffic">For example, if you look at the image above, you’ll see that I get traffic from the keyword phrase “business quotes.” I want more of such traffic as entrepreneurs are one of my biggest segments of readers.I took that keyword phrase and typed it into Google to see what other keywords or phrases it might suggest.<img alt="business quotes suggests" src="/suggests.png" title="business quotes suggests">As you can see, Google suggests that “inspirational business quotes” is another popular phrase to go after. So, I did. I optimized that blog post on business quotes for the term “inspirational” by placing similar words within the text of that page.I found what words Google sees relevant to “inspirational” by running a search query with the “~” symbol in front of the word.<img alt="business quotes similar words" src="/similarwords.png" title="business quotes similar words">If you look at the image above, you’ll notice that Google bolds phrases that are relevant to “inspirational.” After digging through a few pages, I found that Google sees the words “inspire” or “motivational” to be relevant to the word “inspirational.”Now, I rank on page one of Google for terms like “inspirational business quotes” and “motivational business quotes,” which helps drive more long tail traffic.The big mistake I see marketers making with this tactic is that they are getting too greedy. You don’t want to modify your text so much that it makes your content unreadable.For example, I didn’t stuff keywords within that business quotes page as it would ruin the post and cause people to bounce off, which would hurt my rankings in the long run.So, how many times should you add in keywords? Well, that’s the wrong way to think about it. You should only add in keywords that you are pulling from “Google suggest” if you feel it helps readers.For example, I added the word “motivational” more frequently than the word “inspirational” on that business quotes blog post because the feedback I got from a Qualaroo survey was that you felt the quotes were really motivational.Nonetheless, if you want a ratio, there really isn’t a hard number to follow. But as a rule of thumb, make sure your keyword density is below 3% for any particular keyword.<img alt="keyword density" src="/keywords.png" title="keyword density">You can find out your ratios by just putting in your URL on the homepage of Quick Sprout.Now that you got this tactic down, you need to realize that this is a long term strategy. Making these keyword tweaks to your content won’t provide big lifts in the short run. For example, when I made the changes to the business quotes page, it took four months before I saw a 37% increase in search traffic to that page.Another reason why I didn’t see big increases in my search traffic in the short run is because I had to go through hundreds of old blog posts and make similar tweaks. Making tweaks to one page typically won’t provide you the lifts you are looking for.My recommendation to you is that if you want to increase your long tail traffic, consider doing this with a page on your website each day. After six months to a year you should start seeing nice lifts in traffic.SEO doesn’t have to be hard. I could have shoved dozens of keyword tools down your throat and given you complex ways to try to squeeze more traffic out of your current website.But I didn’t! Why? Because simple tactics like the ones above are very effective, assuming you are willing to put in the time and energy to implement them.The only caveat I would give is that you shouldn’t abuse it. Don’t stuff irrelevant keywords on your pages or create a poor user experience. How long does it take to rank in Google?

What does it take to rank in Google and how long do you have to wait before you hit one of the top positions?There is no magic formula for ranking a website in Google neither there is anyone that can tell you how long it will take to get to the first pages. From experience though there are some factors that play an important role and this is what I will try to explain in this article.Google has repeatedly said that they are using more than 255 factors in their ranking algorithm but the most important factors that are also related with how long it takes to rank in Google are the following:Age of the domain – A website that is old and trusted is more likely to rank higher in Google search results than a newer website, provided that other factors remain equal. This does not mean that a new website cannot achieve good rankings but it simply means it will take more time.A domain is considered new when it is active (not parked) for less than 6 months. After the 6 month period you can start getting some serious traffic from search engines. You can read one of my case studies on <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/how-to-build-a-successful-blog-with-more-than-250000-unique-visits-per-month-case-study/">how to build a successful blog with more than 250,000 in less than a year</A>, which is a very good example on how to build traffic for a new domain.Clean domain – This is another factor that can work in favor or against your efforts to rank in Google. A clean domain is a website that has not been penalized from Google either by a manual or algorithmic penalty.How can you tell if your domain is clean? There are 2 ways to do that:Login to Google webmaster tools, click on a website to go to the dashboard and select ‘Manual Actions’ from the Search Traffic menu. If you see the message ‘No manual webspam actions found’ then this means that the website does not have any manual penalties.Besides manual you should also check for algorithmic penalties. The best way to do this is to logon to Google Analytics (or in the analytics tool you are using) and go to the <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/best-google-analytics-reports-for-beginners/">traffic sources report</A>. Select Google as the traffic source and set the date range from the beginning of the year. Watch for any drastic changes in traffic and compare the dates these happen with the <a href="http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change">Google algorithm change history</A>.  If you see a connection between the dates you lost traffic and the date Google rolled out changes then you know that your website was penalized and depending on the type of change you can start working on your recovery.If your domain is not clean then it’s a waste of time to try and rank for any terms in Google because the imposed penalty will not let you. The best way to continue is to first clean your domain or maybe consider starting from the beginning on a new domain.Competition for the keywords you want to rank in Google – There is strong competition especially for the most popular keywords so you should be selective of the keywords you want to rank for.If you try to go after popular keywords believing that this way you will get more traffic, chances are you are not going to achieve much unless you have a very strong and trusted website.What you should do instead is to target low competition keywords until you get high rankings for those and then try to go after popular keywords. High rankings for low competition keywords will get you traffic, links from other websites and slowly this will make your website stronger and able to rank for more important terms.Author Trust (<a href="https://plus.google.com/authorship" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Google Authorship</A>) – This is a new factor that gets more and more attention the last couple of months. Google does not officially accept that author rank is important now but this is something they definitely see coming.<a href="https://plus.google.com/+MarkTraphagen/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Mark Traphagen</A> shares some very good info about the present and future of Google authorship in his <a href="http://www.virante.org/blog/2013/08/04/google-authorship-update-where-is-google-going-with-relauthor/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">google authorship update</A> article together with some nice authorship tips (found towards the bottom of the page).Type of content (news item, article, image etc.) – Another factor that affects the time needed to rank in Google is the type of content. Breaking news stories will rank faster than stories which are not considered news. For example a story about possible war episodes in the Middle East is likely to appear in the top positions faster than your story about food allergies.Likewise a new picture of the new born British prince will get to the top faster than the image you are uploading to accompany your new post.Selection of title (SEO optimized title) – Having an SEO optimized title is more important than you think. I have explained before <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/what-should-i-write-in-my-blog-and-how-to-choose-post-titles/">how to choose titles using the keyword tool</A> but what I want to clarify here is that an SEO title will help you rank faster than a non-optimized title.If you are a normal blogger or webmaster i.e. you have a relatively new website, with a not so strong author profile and only a few incoming links to your website, then even if you write the best content but choose the wrong title you won’t rank for anything, at least in the short term.I have seen this many times before and what I try to explain to my clients is the importance of page titles especially for not so strong websites.Take for example the post you are reading:The title I have chosen ‘How long does it take to rank in Google’ is an SEO optimized title i.e. there are people looking for this term in Google and it does contain keywords. I made this choice because I know from experience that I have more chances for getting a good ranking for this term (in the next couple of weeks) rather than for a non-optimized title i.e. ‘Don’t expect to see your website in the first page of Google anytime soon’.If you have a really strong website and profile then it’s possible to rank for non-optimized titles pretty fast as well but if this is not the case, you can be more selective with your titles and get better results in less time.Content Length – Content length does count as a ranking factor. You can read my <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/top-10-seo-copywriting-tips-for-getting-high-rankings/">SEO Copywriting tips</A> article which references a number of recent studies that prove that lengthy articles are more likely to rank higher than shorter articles. In terms of time needed to rank, an in-depth article about a topic has more chances of ranking higher than a shorter article about the same topic.Number of posts / Quantity of content on website – This is also related with the age of the domain and author trust as explained above. A post published on a website that already has a number of quality published posts will probably rank faster than an article published on a web site with only a few published posts.Original Content – This goes without saying but sometimes it is important to clarify the basics. Don’t expect to rank non-original content on Google or other search engines. This is true for both the post and the website to publish it. If the website has non original content as well then even if you publish original content, it will not rank.SEO is important – <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/5-on-page-seo-techniques-thatll-boost-your-rankings-checklist-included/">On Page</A> and <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/what-is-off-page-seo/">Off page SEO</A> play a very important role not only for ranking a new post or website but also on how long it will take to rank. A <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/how-to-build-a-successful-seo-campaign/">carefully designed SEO Campaign</A> will also speed up the time needed for new pages or posts to rank in Google.Number of external references (links) – A new post/page that receives a number of natural links because it is important, useful and valuable will also climb the SERPS faster.How often you publish new content – The <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/how-often-should-you-publish-new-content/">frequency you publish content</A> affects the time needed to rank a new page in Google. If you have a steady schedule (i.e. 2-3 times per week) then most probably your content will get indexed almost immediately but in the cases that you don’t publish new content that often, it may take a day before search engines find out about it. Note that indexing does not mean ranking, but it’s the first step in the process.Besides what I already explained above, in order to achieve better rankings in Google you can follow these tips:Be patient – Patience is perhaps one the most important characteristics you need to have if you want to succeed online. Search engines are governed by complex ranking algorithms, they have BIG data to manage, competition is huge and it generally takes time to convince them that you deserve one of the top positions in their rankings.Hire a reliable SEO agency – The Internet is very important for all businesses and sometimes when you can’t get the results you want, maybe it’s better to leave it to the pros.  <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/how-to-outsource-seo-without-paying-a-fortune/">Outsourcing to a trusted SEO firm</A> is perhaps the best thing to do and it’s does not cost as much as you think.Keep updating with good quality original content – Don’t give up but keep trying. Instead of checking your ranking statistics many times per day what you can do is forget about Google for a while and concentrate on other ways to <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/how-to-increase-web-site-traffic/">increase your traffic</A>. This will not only help you be less dependent on Google but it will also diversify your traffic and income sources which is necessary if you want to build a solid online presence.It takes time to get good rankings on Google. If you are starting a website now then you may have to wait for 3-4 months until you see your first visits from Google. I would say that 70% of your time is devoted to content and 30% to other tasks.Publishing original and unique content is the first step but it’s not enough. By user engagement we mean on-site comments, Likes, G+’s, tweets etc.Why is this important?For starters it is more than clear that social signals (comments are a social signal as well) have started to play a more important role when it comes to <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/how-long-does-it-take-to-rank-in-google/">ranking in google</A> and second consider the following example.Two web pages on the same subject, but on different websites, compete for one of the top positions in Google SERPS for a particular keyword.  One of the pages has 30 comments, 100 likes and 42 tweets and the other page has no comments or social media mentions.Other things being equal, which of the pages deserves a better ranking? I have more details and examples in my <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/seo-tips-for-beginners-15-ways-to-google-boost-your-web-site/">SEO Tips article</A> but the general guidelines are:Titles should be less than 70 characters in lengthDescriptions should be less than 160 charactersTitles and descriptions should be unique for each and every page in your websiteNo need to keyword stuff titles or descriptionsIf you want to get local customers then optimize both your titles and descriptions for <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/local-seo-checklist-for-small-business/">local SEO</A>This is again related with the quality of the content but if you are an expert about a topic make sure that you show that in your website. Google is looking for trusted sources and if your professional background or experience makes you an ‘expert’ about a topic, you need to demonstrate that in your website.Also you need to understand that the web is no longer anonymous so you need to show who you are, what you do and why your readers / customers / followers should trust you. If you can convince people to trust you, Google (and other search engines) will trust you as well.On page SEO is a term that describes everything that needs to be done on the website itself so that it is optimized for search engines. It is not difficult to have an SEO optimized website and it is the first check you need to do when evaluating your overall internet presence.You can compare your website against my <a href="http://www.reliablesoft.net/5-on-page-seo-techniques-thatll-boost-your-rankings-checklist-included/">on-page SEO check list</A> to get a better idea on what you need to change for on-page SEO.I consider on-page SEO to be more important than ever and that’s why I suggested that you need to be 100% compliant. What I always tell my clients as an example is the following: When building a skyscraper you need to make sure that you have good and strong foundations before start building the floors. If for example you are running a laptop reviews website, you need to have reviews about the latest models as well to show Google that you are in synch with the latest updates in your niche.Whenever I talk about Google SEO to clients and explain all the factors above, the question that I always get as soon as I make a break is: ‘When do we start link building?’ My answer is always the same: ‘Forget about link building, we are not going to do any link building in our campaign’.To say it with some simple words, link building is a think of the past and not only it cannot help your website achieve better rankings in Google but it can do more damage than good.Does that means that Google is not using links as a ranking factor? Absolutely not, Incoming links are still important and play a very important role in Google SEO but what you want is natural links and not artificially created links.The best way to distinguish between the two is the following: A natural link is placed by a webmaster or blogger to help their readers find out more about a subject or add value to their existing content. An artificially created link is anything else that does not fall in the definition of a natural link.So, if you guest post on a low quality website for the purpose of getting a link in your author bio, that’s a bad link. Are you familiar with <a href="http://www.quicksprout.com/2013/09/30/how-googles-move-to-100-not-provided-helps-you-become-a-much-better-marketer/">Google Not Provided</A>, when Google isn’t showing the majority of the keywords that are driving your organic traffic?<img alt="not provided" src="/notprovided.png" title="not provided">Just look at the image above, and you’ll see what I am talking about. For the <a href="http://blog.kissmetrics.com/">KISSmetrics blog</A>, 92% of the search engine traffic is being categorized under “not provided.”If Google won’t show you what you are currently ranking for, how can you improve your search engine rankings?Well, through three simple reports within your Google Analytics interface, you can monitor your rankings and increase your traffic.Let’s dive in and break down how you can use these reports:By connecting your Google Webmaster Tools account to your Google Analytics account, you can track your rankings, the number of impressions your listings are getting and even your click-through rates.What you need to do first is log into your Google Analytics account and click on your website URL to view your report.Once you are in the dashboard, click on the navigation option “Acquisition”, then click on “Search engine optimization” and then click on “Queries”. You should now see a screen that looks something like this:<img alt="google webmaster tools" src="/webmastertoolssharing.png" title="google webmaster tools">Click on “Set up Webmaster Tools data sharing” and follow the steps Google walks you through. The set up shouldn’t take more than a minute or two.Once you complete it, you will now be able to see three reports when you head back to the “search engine optimization” navigational link.The three reports are: queries, landing pages and geographical summary.Let’s examine each of those reports so you can learn how you can use them to increase your search traffic.The first report is called a “queries” report. It will show you all of the keywords you rank for, the number of impressions you are receiving, the number of clicks you are getting, your average ranking position and your click-through rate.<img alt="seo queries" src="/queries.png" title="seo queries">Before we get into analyzing how you can use this data, you need to know that the data in this report is typically delayed by two days. So, if you are trying to look at this data for a brand new site, it won’t work.When you start looking at this report, keep in mind that by default the report is sorted by impressions. That means that the keywords you currently rank for that are getting the highest number of impressions are at the top of the list, and the ones that get the fewest number of impressions are at the bottom of the list.If you are trying to improve your traffic, the quickest way to achieve it is to increase your click-through rate. The click-through rate is dependent on two variables: the first is your ranking position, and the second is the text you are using in your listing.If your ranking is low on the page and your text isn’t appealing, your click-through rate may be as low as 1%.If your ranking on the page is good and your listing copy is appealing, then your click-through rate could be as high as 40% or even 50% on certain keywords.You should be shooting for a click-through rate of at least 20% on keywords that are getting thousands of monthly impressions.As for the keywords to focus on, pick the keywords that are relevant to your business and have the highest number of impressions with a click-through rate of less than 7%. These would be your low hanging fruit. With some small tweaks, you should be able to see big lifts in your search traffic.The next report that you should be looking at is the “landing pages.”Similarly to the queries report, the landing page report shows you which of your pages are ranking well, the number of impressions they are receiving, the number of clicks they are getting, their average ranking position and their average click-through rate.<img alt="seo landing page" src="/landingpage.png" title="seo landing page">Like the queries report, the landing page report will show you your most popular pages first. The pages that have both the highest number of impressions and the lowest click-through rate are the pages you typically should be focusing on.Keep in mind that your overall click-through rate in this report will be much lower, typically by 2x or 3x, than the click-through rate in the queries report as this report takes into account all of your keywords instead of individual keywords.When you look at this report, you will have to cross-reference it with the queries report. It shouldn’t be very hard as your most popular keywords are the ones typically driving traffic to your top 10 landing pages.What you need to do is plug in the following information into a spreadsheet: a list of the landing pages that have a high probability of driving you leads and sales and all keywords related to each landing page that you are already getting impressions for that have a click-through rate of lower than 7%. Your spreadsheet should look something like this:<img alt="seo spreadsheet" src="/spreadsheet.png" title="seo spreadsheet">But before we get into you how you can increase your search engine traffic, let’s look closely at the third report.This report shows which countries your search engine traffic is coming from.<img alt="seo geo summary" src="/geographicalsummary.png" title="seo geo summary">This is important because if your customers are all from one country, then you should only be targeting that one country. If your customers are from all around the world, then you should focus on targeting the world.If you want to target just one country, log into Google Webmaster Tools and select your website. Click on the little “gear” icon and then select “site settings.”<img alt="google webmaster tools gear" src="/gearicon.png" title="google webmaster tools gear">Once you click on the “site settings” option, you should be presented with a screen that looks like this:<img alt="google webmaster tools geo targeting" src="/webmastertoolsicon.png" title="google webmaster tools geo targeting">By checking the “target users in:” box, you can select the country you want to target.If your customers are only located in one country, then I recommend you using this option. If you are selling to people all around the world, don’t choose this option.If you are targeting people around the world, the quickest way to increase your internal search engine traffic is by translating your website into different languages.Now that we’ve covered the three reports, let’s look at the most impactful way in which you can increase your search traffic.Pull up the spreadsheet that you made earlier:<img alt="seo spreadsheet" src="/spreadsheet.png" title="seo spreadsheet">First, look at your rankings there. When analyzing your rankings, treat all numbers as if they were between 1 through 10 as Google only lists 10 results per page.For example, I rank 59 for the term “american express black card”, but I would treat that as a #9-position ranking. For the term “motivational quotes” I rank 390, but I would treat that as a #10-position ranking.Highlight your rankings and click-through rates in either green or red, depending on the position of the ranking and click-through rate as described below.Highlight all rankings in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th position in green. Highlight all rankings below that in red.As for click-through rates, highlight keywords that rank in the 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th spot and have a click-through rate greater than 3% in green, and, of course, use red for scores that are lower than 3%.As for keywords that rank in the 4th, 5th, and 6th spot, highlight the click-through rate in green if it’s greater than 8% and in red if it’s lower than 8%.For keywords in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd spot, highlight them in green if the click-through rate is greater than 20% and highlight them in red if it’s lower than 20%.In the end, your spreadsheet should look something like this:<img alt="seo spreadsheet" src="/spreadsheetmodified.png" title="seo spreadsheet">By looking at the spreadsheet, you will have a good understanding of the areas where you can improve your search engine traffic.To increase positioning of the rankings highlighted in red, you can typically follow <a href="http://www.quicksprout.com/the-advanced-guide-to-link-building/">these link building methods</A> or these <a href="http://www.quicksprout.com/the-advanced-guide-to-seo/">on-page optimization techniques</A>. A few of the easy ones are:Make sure you use the keyword or phrase within the landing page text.Make sure you add the keyword or phrase to your title and meta description tag.Add social sharing icons to the landing page to encourage social shares.Use <a href="http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/">Open Site Explorer</A> to see who links to competing landing pages and then <a href="http://www.quicksprout.com/2012/12/07/the-link-builders-guide-to-email-outreach/">beg those sites for links using this template</A>.As for low click-through rates, the ones in red mean that your title tag and meta description tag aren’t very appealing. You will have to rewrite them to increase your click-through rates.<a href="http://www.quicksprout.com/2013/12/04/11-seo-changes-that-will-give-you-big-results/">By analyzing 63 Google Webmaster Tools accounts, I’ve found that the most clicked-through words are:</A>How to[List-related numbers]FreeYouTipsBlog postWhyBestTricksGreatBy using those words and phrases within your meta description and title tag, you should see an increase in click-through rates.I know the process I laid out may seem a bit overwhelming, but it is actually really easy. It shouldn’t take you more than 30 minutes, and you don’t need any experience as an Internet marketer to follow the steps.Search engine optimization doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need to use dozens of tools or spend thousands of dollars to increase your search traffic. Google Analytics Summit 2013 Keynote Liveblog – The Data Opportunity

Much like <a href="http://www.jeffalytics.com/introducing-universal-analytics-google-analytics/">last year</A>, we are allowed to live blog the event keynote and we have Paul Muret joining us to discuss the future of Google Analytics.The theme to today’s conference is Access, Empower, Act and it is clear that Google is investing in making all of these actions easier through Google Analytics.<img alt="Paul Muret Google Analytics Keynote 2013" border="0" height="400" src="/Paul-Muret-Google-Analytics-Keynote-2013.jpg" title="Paul Muret Google Analytics Keynote 2013.jpg" width="600">Paul Muret starts us off by giving an analogy of how things used to work. Back in the day, building a house meant doing everything manually. In fact, pretty much everything we did was manual. Over times the industrial revolution has made manual activities less prominent. For example, in 1900 36% of Americans worked on farms. Now it is only 3% of Americans on farms. Yet we have more food than ever.<img alt="Building a House Analogy" border="0" height="400" src="/Building-a-House-Analogy.jpg" title="Building a House Analogy.jpg" width="600">We shifted to the information age from 1970-2000.<img alt="Information Age" border="0" height="347" src="/Information-Age.jpg" title="Information Age.jpg" width="600">Today we are in the digital age. To put things into perspective, Paul gives an analogy of the phones in our pocket being 15x more powerful than the first Cray super computer. Wow!<img alt="Digital Age" border="0" height="332" src="/Digital-Age.jpg" title="Digital Age.jpg" width="600">Technology is no longer a barrier to getting things done and many technologies are already mature enough to give us what we need. Google Analytics is a very mature product and today’s announcements are about how they are making things even more powerful for the user. That is the key takeaway here – the power is in people and we need to empower the people in our organizations to succeed.This is especially important as we experience a change in consumer behavior that is absolutely staggering. There are now 2.7 Billion Internet Users, E-Commerce is $224 Billion in annual sales and there are 4 billion videos watched each day on YouTube.<img alt="Consumer Behavior Shift" border="0" height="338" src="/Consumer-Behavior-Shift.jpg" title="Consumer Behavior Shift.jpg" width="600">There is a shift in consumer behavior from buying from brick and mortar shops that is moving to online. This creates a completely different paradigm of measuring consumer behavior that needs our attention.Google Analytics is helping us put together a picture of our customers.<img alt="Access Empower Act Theme" border="0" height="320" src="/Access-Empower-Act-Theme.jpg" title="Access Empower Act Theme.jpg" width="600"><img alt="Build to Access" border="0" height="321" src="/Build-to-Access.jpg" title="Build to Access.jpg" width="600">As marketers, it needs to be easy to collect data about our customers. We need a tool that allows us to connect the right data to the right people. This can include purchase behavior, demographic information and just about anything that helps lead to a better customer experience.Many of the product releases from Google have been aimed at making data access easier and more reliable. Google Tag Manager is a prime example of a tool that was put in place to make data more accessible to marketers. Google Analytics helps connect data to the right people.<img alt="Build to Empower" border="0" height="343" src="/Build-to-Empower.jpg" title="Build to Empower.jpg" width="600">Another need is to provide tools and techniques to better analyze customers and make marketing decisions. This can be viewed as items like the Google Analytics interface, which provides several reports to help make decisions about your company’s marketing direction. This is the aspect of Google Analytics that has traditionally been my favorite and where much of the focus goes in product development for GA.<img alt="Build to Act" border="0" height="328" src="/Build-to-Act.jpg" title="Build to Act.jpg" width="600">We need to be able to act on the data and leverage insights. This is the area that I feel that web analytics has the most room to grow and is the area where most tools fall short to this point. I am very interested in seeing how Google is going to make adjustments to Google Analytics in order to get people to act more often. I think that this is a combination of needing further education, evangelism and ease of use to get this done. Not a small task for a product or the marketplace as a whole.<img alt="Data Driven Opportunity" border="0" height="332" src="/Data-Driven-Opportunity.jpg" title="Data Driven Opportunity.jpg" width="600">Key important areas for getting the Access, Empower, Act paradigm to work:<img alt="Key Impact Areas" border="0" height="331" src="/Key-Impact-Areas.jpg" title="Key Impact Areas.jpg" width="600">Change the way that advertising investments are allocated. This may mean shifting between digital programs or replacing advertising dollars from traditional methods.What are we actually trying to change for our customers?These needs are best described with the Data Driven Opportunity Matrix, which Paul goes on to explain.<img alt="Data Driven Opportunity Matrix" border="0" height="330" src="/Data-Driven-Opportunity-Matrix.jpg" title="Data Driven Opportunity Matrix.jpg" width="600">Access and Empower is a prerequisite to have data driven opportunities. These need to happen before acting can be widely adopted. This is the direction where Google has taken GA over the years.Acting on this data is where economic value is created. Paul says that there may be ways to automate the process and create new opportunity to create more value (I’m very interested in hearing what he means here).Fairmont Hotels used GA data to improve their results from social media. The Social Media metrics they were using were really lame, so they used Google Analytics and doubled traffic and revenue after one year of optimization.  The key was connecting social campaigns to onsite activity.  They learned that different countries had different preferences for social media and promotions worked differently in different areas. Homogenous strategy did not work and they needed to map activity to customers in the market to get great results.  Google Analytics provided them the data and they had to act on it to become successful.Last Example involved Ross Twiddy talking about how he used Google Analytics to create a sense of urgency to influence earlier bookings. They used the Google Analytics real time API to create a widget that shows how many people are currently looking for a vacation on that page. This had a significant impact on conversion by creating scarcity. The real time API gave the website a way to influence their visitors and convert them sooner.I found that this was a great use of data to improve the marketing process and it’s encouraging that they could use the Google Analytics API to get this done. This is the type of automation that might allow us all to act on data in a passive setting.At first I didn’t fully understand what automate would mean, but now that I see how we can surface data to users using the real time API, there is a way to use GA data to automatically create demand.Paul closed his keynote presentation by talking about how we are piecing together a picture of who our customers are, bit by bit. Google is structuring the Google Analytics product to allow us to piece together that customer story and journey into a single data repository to make these decisions. I am definitely encouraged by the way they are getting this done.<img alt="Data Driven Insights" border="0" height="320" src="/Data-Driven-Insights.jpg" title="Data Driven Insights.jpg" width="600">Google has solved much of the problems we have collecting data. They have even given us a great set of tools to empower us to make suggestions on how we can improve results. The last paradigm may be the toughest of all and that is to act on this information. If we can automate this process, it might become a lot less daunting of a task. I am excited to see where things go in the future.Still there? 14 Google Analytics Product Announcements from the 2013 #GASummit

He promises a Jam Packed session of showing what Google Analytics is doing to match the product to the key focuses outlined in Paul Muret’s keynote <a href="http://www.jeffalytics.com/google-analytics-summit-2013-keynote-liveblog-data-opportunity/">the Data Opportunity</A> of Access, Empower, Act.<img alt="Babak Pahlavan Keynote" border="0" height="395" src="/Babak-Pahlavan-Keynote.jpg" title="Babak Pahlavan Keynote.jpg" width="640">There will be two main focus areas for where Google Analytics plans to take the direction of the product: Enterprise and Mobile. This is obviously in response to shifting trends in the marketplace, as well as requests from Google’s premium analytics customers.<img alt="New GA Focus Areas" border="0" height="346" src="/New-GA-Focus-Areas.jpg" title="New GA Focus Areas.jpg" width="640">As Babak says, we are entering the era of data driven opportunities. Google Analytics has a huge community of vocal users who are giving input suggestions for where to take the product moving forward. Google wants to focus more on enterprise features as well as mobile. These are both becoming part of Google’s core strategies moving forward.Google Analytics has had 70+ launches in 2013 alone. That’s a huge number! <img alt="Google Analytics Launches in 2013 to Date" border="0" height="377" src="/Google-Analytics-Launches-in-2013-to-Date.jpg" title="Google Analytics Launches in 2013 to Date.jpg" width="640">I always say that Google Analytics seems like it changes once a week. It turns out that it is even more frequent than that!<BLOCKQUOTE readability="5">“We are not slowing down. We are accelerating the pace of development.”</BLOCKQUOTE>There are 14 announcements today (how am I going to type all of this).Each of the announcements fits into the core paradigms of the conference of Access, Empower, Act.The goal of access is to make sure all of the people in the organization have access to all of the data that surrounds the company. Some challenges need to be overcome before this can be done. Challenges include:Changing sites and taggingCross device measurementLots of internal users to manageLots of web properties and viewsThis all comes down to Google Tag Manager. The purpose of GTM is to simplify the process of tagging websites and I think it serves this purpose quite well. I am a huge fan of Google Tag Manager, and it’s amazing to see how it has grown to serving over 500 million hits per day!<img alt="Google Tag Manager Installs" border="0" height="363" src="/Google-Tag-Manager-Installs.jpg" title="Google Tag Manager Installs.jpg" width="640">To date, GTM has been focused mostly on the web, but now they have released GTM for native apps. No longer do we have to re-tag code within native apps and then submit to an app store. You can ship the app and then make all of your tagging changes at the server side! That’s a huge development for mobile developers.Since they believe in eating their own dog food, Google is using Tag Manger in their own <a href="http://analytics.blogspot.com/2013/09/data-at-your-fingertips-new-version-of.html" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://analytics.blogspot.com']);">Google Analytics app for Android</A>.The new releases of Google Tag Manager are helping them improve by building features that did not previously work within Google Analytics. This leads to our first announcement: Tracking multiple events happening on a page automatically!<img alt="Auto Event Tracking in Google Analytics" border="0" height="367" src="/Auto-Event-Tracking-in-Google-Analytics.jpg" title="Auto Event Tracking in Google Analytics.jpg" width="640">Now instead of tagging multiple events on a page using the data layer (which defeated the purpose of tag management in the first place), you can do this within Google Tag Manager automatically. I am so happy about this development!They are solving one of the biggest deterrents I have seen for GTM to date with this update and making dynamic tag firing the new standard for even tracking.My Interest Level: Off the Charts<img alt="Google Analytics Premium Service Level Agreement" border="0" height="363" src="/Google-Analytics-Premium-Service-Level-Agreement.jpg" title="Google Analytics Premium Service Level Agreement.jpg" width="640">This feature is mandatory for the acceptance of Google Tag Manager within the enterprise setting, so it was needed to make the product widely adopted by premium customers. This will be rolling out in Q4 of 2013.My Interest Level: Low<img alt="Cross Device Measurement" border="0" height="351" src="/Cross-Device-Measurement.jpg" title="Cross Device Measurement.jpg" width="640">Brand new measurement protocol moves from browser based to server side. Also known as Universal Analytics, this allows you to track user centric analytics as opposed to device specific measurement. Make sure to read my post on the <a href="http://www.jeffalytics.com/introducing-universal-analytics-google-analytics/">Universal Analytics announcement</A> from last years Summit.<img alt="Upgrade to Universal Analytics" border="0" height="373" src="/Upgrade-to-Universal-Analytics.jpg" title="Upgrade to Universal Analytics.jpg" width="640">This is something that I figured had to be coming in the next few months, but it is still great to see it formally announced. With this feature in place, I anticipate a lot more people adopting Universal Analytics.My Interest Level: HighI’m not sure how this new slide slipped in there, but next Babak talked about the new Google Analytics announcement for tracking estimated conversions in Google AdWords. <a href="http://adwords.blogspot.com/2013/10/estimated-total-conversions.html" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://adwords.blogspot.com']);">Read about it here</A>.<img alt="Estimated Conversions in AdWords" border="0" height="378" src="/Estimated-Conversions-in-AdWords.jpg" title="Estimated Conversions in AdWords.jpg" width="640">Catch offline conversions across devices.<img alt="Programmatic User Management" border="0" height="366" src="/Programmatic-User-Management.jpg" title="Programmatic User Management.jpg" width="640">This is an enterprise feature that makes user access much easier for big organizations.My Interest Level: LowThe goal is to democratize access to everyone in the organization.<img alt="Google Analytics Acquisition Report" border="0" height="373" src="/Google-Analytics-Acquisition-Report.jpg" title="Google Analytics Acquisition Report.jpg" width="640">I have been using this feature for a few months and I really like the way it brings information to the eye. While I think that there is some room for growth, it is great to see this announced to the public. Rolled out to 100% of users over the next few weeks.The best part of this feature is the defined channel groupings that allow you to track certain source/mediums as a consolidated group. This is a nice feature for customer acquisition reports.My Interest Level: High<img alt="Unified Segments" border="0" height="367" src="/Unified-Segments.jpg" title="Unified Segments.jpg" width="640">This feature has been available to all users for a while and makes segmentation significantly more useful.My Interest Level: Medium<img alt="Demographic Reports" border="0" height="367" src="/Demographic-Reports.jpg" title="Demographic Reports.jpg" width="640">What is missing from Google Analytics today? Demographics! Now you can start to see demographic information in Google Analytics by integrating with Doubleclick.Implement DC.js on your properties and start to see demographic information inside of your Google Analytics reports. Based on the powerful classifications of the Google Display network.Demographics are a marketing goldmine and this information can only help Google Analytics reports become more useful.My Interest Level: High<img alt="Demographic Reports Segments" border="0" height="370" src="/Demographic-Reports-Segments.jpg" title="Demographic Reports Segments.jpg" width="640">How is my audience behaving based on demographic information? Now you can find out by seeing demographic data inside your advanced segments.My Interest Level: High<img alt="Google Analytics Big Query" border="0" height="365" src="/Google-Analytics-Big-Query.jpg" title="Google Analytics Big Query.jpg" width="640"><img alt="GA Big Query" border="0" height="380" src="/GA-Big-Query.jpg" title="GA Big Query.jpg" width="640">Exclusive for GA Premium customers, which is the demographic who would benefit most from this type of data access. Big teams of developers and analysts can do a lot of good with this data. Most small companies will have no idea what any of this means.While I like the idea of liberating this data and making it available to developers, I wonder how many companies will actually use it. Probably those who can afford to go with GAMy Interest Level: MediumAccording to Google, Companies have several challenges that prevent them from acting on the data:Reaching Potential buyersAnalyze display data to actAct on Apps CampaignsI personally believe that there are hundreds of other reasons preventing this data from being actionable, but for the purposes of this live blog I’ll leave opinion out of the commentary.Every day we miss potential buyers because they can’t find what they need on our sites.<img alt="Missed Opportunity" border="0" height="374" src="/Missed-Opportunity.jpg" title="Missed Opportunity.jpg" width="640">96% of traffic is lost from websites (4% on average are converting). Surprised to see the number this high. I think many sites convert much worse.<img alt="Remarketing to Find Buyers" border="0" height="346" src="/Remarketing-to-Find-Buyers.jpg" title="Remarketing to Find Buyers.jpg" width="640">What do we do about it? Remarketing helps us find buyers again! While all Google Analytics users will benefit from these additions and changes to Google Analytics, many of these features will only be used by a small percentage of the sites that have Google Analytics installed. I am not convinced that these features being available in Google Analytics will encourage more small businesses to advertise on Google, but I can see that these tools may make large advertisers even larger.From a product investment perspective, it makes a lot of sense that Google would be taking this approach to their product, because the users that fuel the economic engine of both Google Analytics and Google the company as a whole. My main hope is that this balance can be maintained well into the future and that small businesses are not left behind by Google Analytics moving forward. That would create a disastrous imbalance of power in the online marketplace.
